Local Knowledge

Stari Grad: this is the old town, and is a maze of winding streets and enclosed garden squares. If you’re wanting to take in some of Hvar’s old town charm, just walk in any direction round the cobbled streets and you’ll see all manners of things.

Vbroska: another quiet haven, perfect for the morning after the night before!

Hvar Town: this is where the party happens, and between June and September it rarely stops with locals and tourists alike enjoying a great atmosphere and endless sunny days.

Bars/Clubs

Carpe Diem (Riva) : although you might dispute calling this one a ‘bar’, it’s hard to categorise any other way. This slightly swanky place is never empty, serving all the way through from a groggy-eyed breakfast crowd, to pricey cocktails at dawn.

Hula-Hula (Beach): as the sun sets on a day on the beach, head to Hula-Hula for cocktails sipped to the sounds of house and techno. Their after-beach party is unmissable and runs from 4pm-9pm.

Kiva Bar (just off Riva): this place is heaving almost every night with locals and tourists alike flocking to the cosy atmosphere and old pop classics that are perfect for a good sing along.

3 Prsuta (Petra Hektorovica): for a more local flavour, head to this tiny wine bar where you’ll be able to sink into a comfortable sofa and sip wines grown and produced on the island itself.

Veneranda: as you might expect from the name, this bar and club has a terrace with amazing views and is located within the walls of an old monastery. Don’t let that put you off: there’s absolutely nothing sacred about this place, pumping out electronic tunes to a young local crowd all night long.

Loco Bar (main square): with drinks that have stayed relatively cheap despite the town’s increasing popularity, Loco is a place where you can expect plenty of locals. Definitely one to relax in before, after, or between the areas more lively hangouts. Try their coffee- which is definitely one of the best in town.

Bolero Cocktail Bar (along the promenade): this is the high point of the local bar and club scene in more ways than one- it’s location gives drinkers unparalleled views, in a high-end setting with comfortable sofas and shady pines. Cocktails are great, and it attracts a pretty lively crowd by late afternoon as people empty off the beaches.

Konoba Menego (Kroz Grodu 26): dry red wine from a family vineyard and traditional Croatian tapas are the order of the day at this intimate, candle-lit wine bar. The stone walls and ceiling are hung with everything conceivable: goat skins, ropes, nets, and legs of ham!

Pink Champagne (Ive Milicica 4): creating a classy, burlesque vibe in the town centre, Pink Champagne is always a hit with hen parties looking for something a little different on their night out. Enjoy nightly cabaret, and DJs that get the party going at around 2am.

Red Baron (Riva): If the sometimes pricey drinks start to get the better of your wallet during your trip, head to Red Baron which has quickly become a local favourite thanks to its cheap prices and laid-back outdoor vibe. An open awning gives beautiful views over the harbour.

Ka’Lavanda (Ul Mate Milicica 9): Just a short walk from the old cathedral in the central square, this cocktail bar is ideal for a few late-evening drinks before you head out for the night. Its rustic outdoor atmosphere gives the feeling of a stumbled-upon find.

Eat Like a Local

Huljic (Ul. brace Batos): If you feel like treating yourself on your stay, then Huljic provides the perfect combination of a laid-back feel with stone and wood decor whilst offering up delicious food that fuses traditional Dalmatian dishes with new world flavours.

Robinson (Mekicevica): for a rustic lunch experience head out of town and down the coast to Robinson. Claim your spot and place your order before spending some time diving in and out of the crystal water (bluer than usual thanks to the bleached-white beach stones). When the restaurant owner, Domagoj, shouts out your lunch order you head under the thatched roof to enjoy local fare and a few beers.

The Fig Cafe Bar (22 Trg SV . Stjepana): in one of Hvar’s many labyrinth side streets, stumble upon this amazing cafe/restaurant. Serving up fresh food with a mediterranean feel, this is some of the most reasonably priced and best eating in the city.

50 Hvar (10 Sveti Marak): the best burgers on the island, hands down. This place has a very relaxed set-up, with take-away available as well as places to sit and enjoy your meal and the views. Ideal spot for a hangover curing meal.

Spice (Trg Svetog Stjepana 30): If the Croatian food on offer isn’t quite your thing, then Spice offers a great alternative of Asian and Thai flavours in the historic town centre.

Staying Safe: Hvar is a fairly laid-back and safe town to visit, but be careful when booking excursions off-land. The party boats and boat-taxis taking tourists to and from various night spots can be a good laugh- but they can also get incredibly overcrowded and unsafe particularly at night.
